EBRAINS Technical Teams

At the heart of EBRAINS lies a coordination effort that encompasses a spectrum of technical activities essential to the project’s success. This structured oversight guarantees alignment with overarching goals, maintaining the integrity and excellence of the initiative.

On a more specialized front, the project deploys focused working groups dedicated to safeguarding and enhancing specific technical domains such as system architecture, software integration, service quality, and security. At the same time, EBRAINS Operations ensures that the infrastructure’s services, both established and newly introduced, run seamlessly and are integrated within the updated operational workflows.

EBRAINS Technical Coordination

The vision of EBRAINS Technical Coordination is to create a cohesive, interoperable, and user-friendly infrastructure that supports the diverse needs of the neuroscience research community. This vision encompasses not just the development and maintenance of advanced tools and services but also the fostering of a collaborative ecosystem where researchers can share knowledge, data, and methodologies.

It establishes quality standards, oversees their implementation, and ensures the technical maturity of all components, with a particular emphasis on and certification.

EBRAINS Operations

The operations of EBRAINS are handled by a single dedicated cross-disciplinary Ops Team, in charge of all aspects related to the continued, uninterrupted, and high-availability operation of EBRAINS. Members of the Ops Team may be affiliated with the EBRAINS AISBL, EBRAINS AISBL members, competence centers, ad hoc project partners, or even external organizations and sub-contractors. Regardless of their affiliation their assigned responsibilities as members of the Ops Team are managed, directed, and overseen exclusively by the EBRAINS CIO (see Governance for more information). See the list of the EBRAINS Operations here

Ops Responsibilities

In more detail, the responsibilities of the Ops Team include at least the following:

  • Deploy, maintain, and manage EBRAINS over the available base infrastructure, allocating computing and storage resources in accordance with EBRAINS requirements and access policies.
  • Design, implement, enforce, and manage policies, instruments and interventions related to EBRAINS deployment, availability, monitoring, redundancy, and security.
  • Design, develop/create, maintain, deprecate, and sunset EBRAINS platform software components.
  • Onboard/offboard EBRAINS services according to the established integration, interoperability, and business policies.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to national nodes/competence centers regarding the satisfaction of the EBRAINS federation technical guidelines and requirements.
  • Assemble, assess, and provide to EBRAINS AISBL quantitative information regarding the utilization, availability, and SLA performance of EBRAINS.

Not Responsible For

  • Developing new EBRAINS services and offerings.
  • Providing training services and first-level support to EBRAINS users.
  • Managing the operation of federated EBRAINS services.

Working Groups

These groups focus on different aspects of software distribution, integration, quality, architecture and security within the EBRAINS ecosystem.

EBRAINS Software Distribution Integration and Quality

To ensure the integration and high quality of software distributed through EBRAINS platforms. This group focuses on establishing standards, practices, and guidelines for software integration and quality assurance.

EBRAINS Software Distribution on HPC

To facilitate the distribution and efficient operation of EBRAINS software on High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments.

Services Quality

Dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the quality of services offered by EBRAINS. This involves monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement of service delivery.

Architecture

Focuses on designing and maintaining the overall technical architecture of EBRAINS infrastructure. This group ensures architectural consistency, scalability, and alignment with best practices across all platform components.

EBRAINS Base Infrastructure

Access to base infrastructures, including cloud resources, storage, High-Performance Computing (HPC), and Neuromorphic Computing (NMC) resources from internal and external providers (e.g., EuroHPC JU and FENIX, NN resources, commercial cloud providers, neuromorphic compute centers) to enable sustainable EBRAINS
